| Comments | This outing includes a trail passing through much of the west side and all of the south side of Baty Butte. Thunder Mountain is an extension of this trip, and can still be done as a day trip. The route includes abandoned trails and decommissioned roads. The torn-up gravel of former roads encourage growth of drought-tolerant pioneer wildflowers in the sunny treeless areas. There are several interesting geologic displays in this once very active volcanic area. This hike is about 5 miles in length with an overall elevation gain over 400 ft. Plants not in the linked facebook post include an Arnica with a single flower when blooming, Ribes viscosissimum, Sedum oregonense, Fragaria virginiana platypetala, Viola sempervirens, Sorbus_scopulina_cascadensis, Boykinia major, Corallorhiza mertensiana, Pedicularis racemosa, Lilium washingtonianum, and a short ways off this route Saxifraga bronchialis vespertina. At the peak of Baty Butte is a small population of Douglasia laevigata. |
