Description

The Labyrinth is just east of Coyote Wall. The trail takes you through grassy plateaus, a lovely creek with a small waterfall, rocky outcrops, talus slopes, and great Gorge views. This is a wonderful place to see early Spring wildflowers.

I recommend that you peruse the US Forest Service's trail map. Despite the proliferation of trails, it is difficult to really get hopelessly lost. If in doubt, return downhill!

WARNING: As always in this part of the Eastern Gorge, there is plenty of poison oak. Stay on the trail(s) and you will be fine.

Directions

Take Interstate 84 east to Hood River. Take exit 64 and drive north across the Hood River Bridge ($2 toll for passenger cars). Turn right onto Washington SR-14, and drive east for approximately 4.5 miles. Turn left onto Courtney Road, then turn right almost immediately into the trailhead parking area. The hike begins on Old Highway 8, which is at the east end of the parking area.

On weekends the parking area will often be full. If so, parallel park on either side of Courtney Road. Alternatively, you can park on the east end of Old Highway 8 (near Rowland Lake), then walk west instead of east.

There is a pit toilet, but no other facilities. The closest "real" rest area is at Chamberlain Lake, five miles further east along Highway 14.
